Pulsed electric fields (PEFs), state-of-art energy modalities for various surgical applications, constitute various technologies that share a common set of principles for energy delivery and the resultant tissue-scale effects. PEF technologies share three common characteristics: the delivery of an electrical signal for manipulating dissolved ionic charge movement in the intra- and extracellular fluids and their interactions, independence from thermal processes to invoke their mechanism of action on cells, and maintenance of a safety margin by prevention of structural protein denaturing that comprises the extracellular matrix.  Because of these unique characteristics, PEFs have been clinically used in a number of applications such as cardiac arrhythmias, oncology, chronic bronchitis, etc. whose clinical value has been clearly demonstrated.  The mechanism of actions, technology innovations and their clinical applications will be discussed at the presentation.
