Building a bridge from the Island of Academic ideas (e.g. Intellectual property) over the Sea of threats (e.g. Regulations) to the World of healthcare (e.g. commercialization)

Most new medical device start with research from academic institutes, which are often seen as islands, producing intellectual results (e.g. papers) only other researcher can understand. Although some of this research leads to new inventions (intellectual property) only a few of these make it to new medical devices, successfully commercialized over the world. From a researchers perspective this make sense, because successful researchers now how the wright a good paper and from that a good grant proposal to continue the research. Most researchers are not so good in writing, quality documents, risk analysis, validation protocols or business plans, all needed to translate a research result into a medical device. So only a few research try to cross this bridge from academic to the commercial world. We developed the Pontes (Bridge) Innovation Method to bring more research results to the market. We take over the Innovation Management, inviting other expert (e,g, design, business, regulation, IP, etc.) in this journey, but with the initial researcher still involved. In this presentation I will explain this method, give examples of needed expertise, threats, innovative products on the market and lessons learned.
