Echo laser and Microwaves in the treatment of thyroid microcarcinomas

The diagnosis of microcarcinoma of thyroid gland has been increasing dramatically to the point that many researchers define this phenomenon a real epidemic situation. The main treatment possibilities is represented by minimally invasive surgery, observational approach and percutaneous interventions through several energy instruments such as microwaves, radiofrequency and laser. In the latter case some new technologies have been proposed characterized by the use of reduced caliber needles leading to less transmitted energy to the tissues. Some important series have been already published and multicentric studies have been set up in order to demonstrate both the efficacy and the safety of these approaches. Also shared guidelines are available and are widely discussed in order to establish the correct indications that remain of paramount importance.
